Our fascination for pianos is universal and timeless. In 2012, Ivy came across a report in NY Times about a piano moving company in Pennsylvania transporting pianos from households to the community dump. The video footage of pianos being pushed out of the back of the truck and then crash-landing onto the ground drove her to tears! She was then inspired to embark a journey of collecting piano stories during her travels since 2012."Newfoundland Clavier Chronicle" features four piano stories captured during Ivy's first visit in Newfoundland in September, 2016.Watch Clavier Chronicle II (2015-2018) here: https://vimeo.com/channels/clavierchronicle2

Oslo: I am in love with Operahuset (2013), short film, 02:40Oslo Operahuset is the reason why I started learning Norsk in September 2011 because it represents all things I like about Norsk people, culture and designs. When I visited Oslo for the first time in October 2008, I was blown away by the design of Operaen and the philosophy behind its design. It resembles a snow-covered mountain that slants into Oslofjord. It is a very Norsk design because one can easily find mountains rising above the water in the beautiful Norway. It is a very inviting & democratic design because anyone can walk along the roof (covered with Italian marble & white granite) of this opera house to the rooftop. 24/7.The idea is to make people of all walks of life welcomed with the inviting exterior and hope that people would be interested in attending opera & ballet performances inside of the opera house.I've had the pleasure to enjoy watching an opera and a few ballet performances performed by Den Norsk Opera og Ballett at Operahuset in 2008. In 2013, I’ve also had the privilege to visit the office of Snøhetta who brilliantly designed Operahuset.
Ballstad: my very first rorbu! (2013), short film, 02:30Ballstad is known as the most picturesque fishing village in Lofoten.Mountains rise from the ocean...which is quite common in Lofoten but Ballstad offers different scenery depending on what direction you are facing! In addition to its stunning landscape, I got to stay in a traditional rorbu (fisherman's hut) with the mountain in the back and the harbor right outside of the dining room & bathroom windows!I love the design of this rorbu especially its hallway between the front door and the inner door (that keeps the warmth of rorbu in) where you can shed your oilskins, boots, fishing gears before you enter the living room.I need a rorbu exactly like this one built for me in Oregon...can anyone help? :)
London: Salmon Smoker's Piano (2013), short film, 5 min.Ole-Martin Hansen is originally from northern Norway. He came to London to study sound arts. Ole was having trouble making a living as a sound artist in London. He decided to recreate the exquisite smoked salmon taste that was passed on from his grandfather by building a replica of his grandfather's smoke chamber in Stoke Newington. Since his grandfather said that the salmon is still alive while swinging in the sea breeze because the enzyme travels through the body of the fish due to the movement, Ole decided to serenade his salmons on his piano during the smoking sessions at the smoke house.
Avenue of Roses (2013), Willamette Week, 22 min.Featured in Willamette Week on 2/20/2013.https://www.wweek.com/portland/article-20287-avenue-of-the-roses.htmlSE 82nd Ave. is the longest strip mall in the city of Portland.Due to the increase in Asian populations and businesses on SE 82nd in the past 10-20 years, many Portlanders started to call SE 82nd the "new Chinatown".Can we really call this area "new Chinatown" just because there's great Chinese food in SE 82nd?What about businesses and restaurants owned by Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and the Hispanics? What about that Slavic church with the huge movie theater marquee, right on SE 82nd Ave.?In December 2012, I had a chance to zip up & down SE 82nd about 18 times in two days, in order to interview 10 businesses and a couple churches about the changes in SE 82nd in the past 10-20 years.
Henningsvær: rainbows all day long (2013), short film, 02:42October weather in Henningsvær was very unstable: 3 minutes of sun followed by 3 minutes of rain. Sun and rain alternated all day long. One thing you can count on always is the strong wind in Henningsvær because it is located on the southern tip of two islands that stick way out in the ocean!October is a month when there are not many tourists in Lofoten because of the rain and lack of fishermen actions (cod fishing season in Lofoten: November-April).I was happy being the solitary traveler in Lofoten.Just me and the nature. Perfect.

Due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, for many early Chineseimmigrants, it was the only way to go home.“Portland documentarian Ivy Lin has a patient, naturalistic eye for the boarded-overand fenced-off bits of the city’s history; her camera is an unflashy reservoir of lostplaces.” —Aaron Mesh, film critic, Willamette Week

On August 31, 2007, the store closed its doordue to the inescapable fate of an independent record store in thedigital age. The staff had a month to decommission and strip thespace to the bare walls. As a former store employee, I decided todocument the final days of deconstruction and interview some ofthe regulars as they dropped by for the last time.
